Work in progress: Tulip bouquet in colored pencil, status as of this Thursday, 15 Feb.
This week I did not post a single photo on Instagram. In fact, other than a short sketch session, I did not even work on the #29februaryflowers2024 challenge at all. And that is totally okay.
This week I chose to spend my studio hours on making progress towards completing this longstanding UFO in colored pencil. The contrast between the dark background and the vibrant flowers is becoming more dramatic.
With limited time to spend making, and a very slow, detail-oriented process, it seems a better use of time to focus on working towards the full expression of a concept. It’s enjoyable to spend time sketching out lots of ideas, but it’s a lot more satisfying to pursue an image to completion. There’s definitely an end in sight on this piece. Can’t wait to share it with you all when it’s finally ready!
Which do you prefer? The social fun of joining a group project, or pursuing a self-imposed challenge? Share your thoughts in the comments!
It depends. Sometimes time constraints at a point in time only allow for a certain amount of time a day. Sometimes participating in a group/social type of activity is appropriate at that time. I do have quilting projects that are large and self-imposed goals are the only way to get those completed.
Your project is stunning BTW. It looks finished to me!
It's beautiful, Wren. I love the detail you've gotten.
I am definitely the self imposed challenge type. It might be my adhd - I need a goal to complete something creative.
