This morning was the first day of #the100dayproject. As the sun came up, I grabbed my oil pastels and did a quick sketch of the Jemez Mountains as they were lit up by the first rays of light.
One of my inspirations for this series is the amazing color mastery and pastel skills of Second Gen Abstract Expressionist painter Wolf Kahn. Like others in his cohort, such as California painters Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud, Kahn painted representationally, but through a strong abstractionist lens. He is absolutely one of my favorite American painters. The two gorgeous coffee-table books shown next to my sketchbook are well worth tracking down, if you love color like I do.
My website, here, has a bit more detail. I’ll be posting daily images during the 100-day project on my website, with weekly summary posts here on Substack. Join me here next week for a progress update!
Beautiful sketch, I love the colours you have chosen! I had never come across Wolf Kahn before thanks so much for introducing me to his work. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of your project.
You are so incredibly talented and I love your writing style.
